I have AWFUL bunions, and have had them for years. I have had to do a lot of things (some kind of crazy) to be able to keep running with them....like cutting holes in my running shoes. I have found some gel padding that can be worn like a little sock on the forefoot that helps. I also use a little gel toe separator between my big toe and second toe. As for surgery....I am a surgical nurse, I WILL NOT have bunion surgery unless I become totally incapacitated by my bunions. Some people have success with the surgery, but a large number do not. They continue to have pain...only sometimes worse than before the surgery.
Complete recovery (getting back to running) is approx 6 to 8 months.
One more thing, I did get hard orthotics...did not help, but I have found a gel insole made to correct pronation and this has helped.
Foot massages are also great!
