Bobby: Good for you for getting out there! Concentrate on persistence in your first weeks of training and less on speed. Put some walk breaks in there if need be, and then stay out longer. About 10% increase in weekly mileage and/or intensity is all you should do to avoid injury (you didn't say how old you are, but this worked to keep me injury free). I started reading Runner's World and found it enormously helpful when I took up running in my 40s after a long break. They have training guides for all levels. Think about training for a 5K race as a goal after you've acquired a 6 week base of training at consistent levels...the group experience and adrenaline are great motivators. I remember at one of my first races here striking up a conversation with a runner next to me who said he used to weigh 280 and this race was indicative of how much he'd progressed.
Good luck!
