The Funky Monkey 5K and Fun Run will be held on the University of South Alabama campus on Saturday -- the run-up, so to speak, to a 50-foot-long banana split.
The race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the USA intramural fields.
The fun run, a three-quarter-mile loop of the intramural field, starts at 8:45 a.m. Children through 12 years old are eligible to win awards in the fun run.
All proceeds from the Funky Monkey 5K and Fun Run benefit the Thompson Holdings Foundation, which supports efforts to improve the quality of life in the communities served by Thompson Holdings Inc. companies.
The race includes the Funky Monkey Charity Challenge. Participants can write the name of a 501(c)3 charity on their registration form. The charity with the largest participation will receive a grant for $1,000 from the Thompson Foundation on race day.
Runners can register at McCoy Outdoor and Run-N-Tri in Mobile and Running Wild in Fairhope until noon Thursday. Runners can register online until midnight Thursday. Race-day registration will be start at 6:30 a.m. at the race site.
All registered runners are invited to the Funky Monkey finish party, where Cammie's Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe will create a 50-foot-long banana split. The post-race party will feature chocolate milk, bananas, peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches, door prizes, awards and a costume contest.
The Monroe Academy Volunteer Spirit 5K and Fun Run also is set for Saturday. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the fun run begins at 9 a.m. at the school.
The event is organized by the Monroe Academy PTO.
Runners can register online until midnight Thursday. Race-day registration starts at 7:30 a.m. at the school.
Snacks will be provided after the race.
St. Patrick's Leprechaun Chase features a 10K, 5K and fun run at St. Patrick's School in Robertsdale on Sunday.
The 10K and 5K start at 8 a.m., with the 2-mile fun run to follow.
The event benefits the school.

Also on Sunday, the Running with the Saints 5K Run/Walk is set to start at 4 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile.
The event is sponsored by the St. Paul's Parents Council to benefit the school.

The post-race part on Quigley Field will include children's activities with food and beverages for sale.
