Better yet, step off the course well before the finish, say 10 yards before. An even worse faux pas is to run through the finish line and then duck out of the chute before you get to the people taking the bib tags at the end of the chute - for then the time you crossed the finish line will be assigned to the person who crosses the finish line next behind you.
