You've had enough comments by now, but that's never stopped me from tossing in my "wisdom." --ha! So take this opinion however you wish:

Having just completed my first marathon after five years of consistent running (including a halfer last year), and having trained properly for the marathon, I never ever ever would recommend someone running a marathon without training for it (unless I knew that person and knew of his/her all-world athletic ability and ability to resist injury). You will hate yourself for it -- at mile 15 (and 16 and ...) and especially in the days and weeks following.

The marathon, and the preparation for it, form a tremendous challenge: put in the time for training, and you will be doubly proud of your accomplishment (and a lot healthier).
