My husband and I have asked our CPA several times this same question, and his answer was "no." As Victor mentioned in his posting, our CPA says the same thing, we are getting a benefit in return for the race entry fee: a t-shirt, food, beverages and etc.
But if you sponsor a race, I believe you would be able to claim that.
