I don't have the scientific explanation, but from what I gather a bacterial "bloom" will attach itself to other organic matter in an oxygen-rich environment (like swimmers churning up surface water). These microbes, which can number in the billions, can add up to 2-4 lbs to a human body swimming in the water. Fortunately, they die quickly as the triathlete dries off on the bike, depriving them of the life-giving H20 these pesky critters thrive on.
