Other than that, the Pacers put on a 2-mile race at Chickasabogue park on the second Tuesday in August. That's about it for shorter races unless you want to run the 1-mile fun run at a longer event. I don't really know why there aren't many shorter races. I'm guessing it's strictly interest and not equipment or logistics.
If you want to do some sprint races, the USATF (USA track & Field, the governing body for track and field in the US) puts on regional age group track championships. You could check www.usatf.org to see if you can find the meet for this area. That would be one opportunity to run some shorter distances.
