Ben - recovery is an individual thing and depends a lot on your recent training, current fitness and age. When I was in college, I could run a 5k or 8 race on Saturday and do an easy long run on Sunday. Those days are long-gone. When I was in my 30's and running regularly, I typically needed 1-2 days of easy cross-training before I'd try to run again. Now that I'm in my 40's and doing triathlons, I will take 1-2 days off and another day or two of easy cross training before I try to run again.

The main thing is to be honest with yourself about how you feel. If you're still tired or sore, continue to rest. If you feel ready to go, hit the roads for an easy day to see if you really do feel the way you think you do.
