Don't waste your time with Lynn's old dogs. I'll loan you my dog, Alex. In his herding dog/ working dog mind, he has decided that it's his job to keep squirrels out of our yard and spends all his days making sure they're all "tree'ed" or otherwise off "HIS PROPERTY". Unlike Lynn's dogs, Alex's kill total is now two. I know because I didn't want him eating the remains and had to "alpha-dog" them away from him.
The shelters on the Appilacian trail use lines to hang packs and food. They tie tin cans about half-way up to keep the mice from running down the lines from the roof to get to peoples food and packs and stuff. A similar device might work on the pole. Get one of those collars designed to keep dogs from scratching "owies" and place it funnel down on the pole. That might keep the squirrels from climbing the pole as they wouldn't be able to jump the "bottom" of the open funnel.
