At the ATR awards ceremony, I was pleased at the announcement that course records would now be kept for the 2 mile "fun run". The first place finishers for male and female naturally set course records, as the 29th ATR was the first time they have been officially recognized. As my 10-year-old daughter finished the 2 mile, her first race ever, I was glad to see that the fun runs are starting to get some recognition. Until Saturday, the only ATR I had ever run was the 2 mile, some 25 years ago. Although primarily seen as races for kids or beginners, some have seen these shorter distances as another opportunity to set a PR, and I think and hope we'll see more of that. It's a great introduction to running, and what youngster would not want to see their name in the Paceletter or at least on a results page following the race. Good habits start early, and I commend the ATR for seeing this as another opportunity to advance running in Mobile.
