Kenneth -

The following is from Peggy Olive (ATR race director):
==================================
As long at the ATR remains a world-class, USATF sanctioned race, we will have to abide by the rules approved by the governing body of USATF. At this point, the elapsed time between when a runner hits the start mat and finish mat is not considered to be the official time. Perhaps that rule (Rule 245, Page 146 of 2008 USATF Competition Rules) will change as chip timing becomes more widespread and reliable.
==================================

I.E. Gun time is the official time used for results.

One of the reasons we went to chips was because runners were asking for it. And, it is more accurate and reliable than our traditional puch-button timer method.

Also, when we investigated using chips, the only instances where net(chip) times could be used were as qualifying times for some of the larger races around the country.

Hope this helps.
